What is E-Commerce?

E-commerce is the buying and selling of goods through business-to-consumer and business-to-business transactions via the internet. E-commerce is a critical part of a retailer’s omnichannel strategy, with sales opportunities to order online from the retailer for delivery to the consumer or curbside pickup, as well as direct to the consumer from the manufacturer.

The pandemic accelerated the adoption of e-commerce and brought an even tighter integration between core ERP and logistics processes (e.g., order management, fulfillment, and delivery). Companies require an SAP ERP system that is agile, accommodating rapid changes in consumer demand. A multichannel strategy is paramount to meeting the needs of customers where they are.

Key Considerations for SAPinsiders

  • Learn how a company transformed its e-commerce during a pandemic. For Breakthru Beverage, a North American distributor of premium wine, spirits, and beer brands, the coronavirus pandemic helped accelerate its e-commerce integration. With a transformation already underway, Joe Bruhin, Executive Vice President and Chief Information Officer, says the company’s e-commerce initiative was originally slated as a three-year plan but was completed in one year. “We’re able to move fast and adapt to changing demand patterns because of our end-to-end SAP Commerce Cloud and SAP Customer Data Cloud solutions, as well as SAP ERP Central Component (ECC) for our ERP, which has helped us tremendously in meeting customer demand,” Bruhin says. • Use the internet as a sales and interaction channel with SAP Web Channel Experience Management (WCEM) 2.0. Companies that need multichannel, self-service interactions across e-commerce, e-marketing, and e-service can achieve those objectives by turning the internet into a sales channel for their business. SAP Web Channel Experience Management (WCEM) 2.0 is an e-commerce solution with complete business-to-consumer functionality and basic functionality for business-to-business scenarios. In this article, author Elizabeth Thorburn, member of the Customer Solution Adoption (CSA) team within SAP’s Customer LOB Solutions area, highlights the new features of WCEM 2.0 and various functionalities within e-commerce, e-marketing, and e-service areas.
  • Increase your revenue through cross selling and upselling with SAP E-Commerce. When selling to consumers online, retailers and manufacturers can cross-sell or upsell to customers for increased revenue. When a customer selects a product online, other complementary products can be suggested for cross selling, or a more expensive option can help upsell a buyer. Birgit Starmanns, Senior Director in Solution Marketing at SAP for EPM and Finance solutions, explains how to use SAP E-Commerce for mySAP CRM for cross-selling and up-selling opportunities. “Increasingly, customers use the Internet to easily research and compare products. Therefore, it is crucial to provide in one place all of the information a customer needs to make a purchasing decision,” she writes. Read the full article to learn how to set up cross-selling rules.
