Backing up your business-critical systems is standard practice in every data center regardless of industry. The most crucial component to back up is your database to ensure no critical data is lost in the event of an outage.

Now imagine you are an IT manager charged with backing up your organization’s SAP HANA database. You’ve weighed your options and have decided to use a third-party solution to do so, but don’t know where to start. Where do you find a list of available options that you can trust?

There’s always the SAP Integration and Certification Center, which offers information about over 1,500 certified partner companies and even more certified solutions that cover everything from back-up to monitoring to archiving. While these solutions are designed to integrate with many different setups, you also need to consider your own landscape’s specific needs, along with the necessity of a Linux-compatible back-up solution. This need is what led SUSE to develop SUSE Connect, a solution that allows SUSE Linux Enterprise Server (SLES) for SAP applications customers to search specifically for solutions compatible with Linux.

Ensure Compatibility

The SUSE Connect program, which is integrated into SLES for SAP applications, provides a user interface through the local systems management framework called Yet another Setup Tool (YaST). This interface allows the user to browse through partner software that has been tested to run on SLES for SAP applications. By removing solutions that aren’t applicable to your situation — such as those that aren’t compatible with Linux or that are devoted to other tasks — the process for finding what you need is much more streamlined. You are free to search through the solutions, confident that whatever you choose will work with your system.

It is important that SAP customers consider their business needs as well as their system requirements when choosing a third-party offering to complement their SAP HANA database.

Easy Installation

SUSE Connect isn’t just about searching. You can also download and install demo versions of solutions in just a few clicks and begin using the software immediately. Depending on the solution, you might be able to use it in your SAP HANA system right out of the box. In this way, SUSE Connect behaves similarly to an online store, but without monetary transactions.

The partner software provided within the SUSE Connect program is free and comes with basic functionality, giving you the option to test-run the solution before committing to a contract. To purchase the software beyond what’s provided in the demo, you must contact the partner directly. In addition to the partner’s contact details, the program also provides access to documentation and information about other offerings, such as training, to aid in the decision-making process.
